$250,000 in Bonds Lost in Hurricane Katrina Recovered

$250,000 in once-submerged bearer bonds courtesy of Hurricane Katrina have been recovered according to Louisiana State Treasurer John M. Schroder.

Schroder says these were held in Whitney Bank’s safety deposit boxes in New Orleans.

The owner of the water-logged bonds reportedly placed them in a plastic bin and stored them in his attic.

The owner passed away with the $250,000 bonds still in his attic.

From KLFY -

"The Department of the Treasury paid out $250,000 to the heir of the formerly-soggy bonds after serial numbers matched with numbers the state had on record. The bonds had previously been listed as unclaimed property."
