Louisiana loves their dogs like, if not more, than their own children. But you didn't hear that from me.

Deciding to rescue a dog is one of the most selfless acts you can do. Whether you choose to support a local shelter in Acadiana or find a dog scared after a hurricane on the side of the road, that dog will never forget that you saved them.

Supporting our local animal shelters keeps healthy animals that would make perfect pets from being euthanized. Deciding to adopt a pet is a lifelong commitment, which means that when life throws curve balls your way, abandoning them should never be an option. Almost daily I see people trying to rehome pets because they " don't have time for them anymore". Keep in mind that adopting a dog is a 10+ year commitment.

Consider Fostering

Fostering is a great way to determine if a pet is something you have the time and financial means to support in the long run. Not only does fostering from a shelter or rescue organization give you and the pet time to feel each other out, it gets that animal out of the shelter and into a home which helps them acclimate better in their forever home.

I often hear people say they want a particular breed, like a golden doodle or a German shepherd. A simple Google search 'Golden Doodle Rescue' will pull up rescue organizations that primarily focus on saving a particular breed from abusive situations and shelters. So when people ask you to adopt instead of shopping, it's because even pure bred-designer dogs end up in shelters.

If you or someone you know is interested in adopting, consider supporting any of our animal shelters in Acadiana:

  • Acadiana Animal Aid
  • Caddo Parish Animal Shelter
  • Lafayette Animal Shelter & Care Center
  • St. Martin Animal Shelter
  • St.Landry Animal Shelter
  • Iberia Parish Animal Shelter
  • City of Crowley Animal Shelter
  • Haseya's New Beginning Animal Rescue
  • Acadia Parish Animal Control
  • Companion Alliance
  • Friends of the Animals Dog Adoption House

These are just a few of the many animal shelters in our community.

We asked our listeners to share photos of their rescue dogs that rescued them, and they did not disappoint.
