A Monday morning (Jan. 16) crash involving a train and an 18-wheeler has closed Verot School Road at Evangeline Thruway (Hwy 90) until further notice.

UPDATE (12:00 p.m.):

Upon further investigation, Sgt. Robin Green with Lafayette Police says the driver of the 18-wheeler attempted to beat the train by going around the crossing guards which were already down before the train collided with the semi-truck.

As originally reported (The driver attempted to cross over the tracks before the train made it to his intersection causing the crossing guards to get stuck to his truck.) Through further investigation, it was determined that the crossing guards were already down and the driver of the 18-wheeler went around them in an attempt to cross over the tracks before the train made it to his intersection.

 

UPDATE (9:05 a.m.):

Sgt. Robin Green with Lafayette Police Department released the following statement in regards to the Monday morning crash.

Lafayette Police Officers are on the scene of a major vehicle crash involving a train and an 18-wheeler. The crash occurred in the 700 block of E. Verot School Road around 7:01 a.m. The accident occurred when the driver of the 18-wheeler approached the railroad tracks located at the intersection of E. Verot School Road at Hwy 90. The crossing guards for the railroad track were coming down as the driver the driver of the 18-Wheeler approached. The driver attempted to cross over the tracks before the train made it to his intersection causing the crossing guards to get stuck to his truck. The 18-wheeler was unable to make it fully across before the train collided with it.  At this time no injuries have been reported.  We are asking people to avoid the intersection of Verot School Road at Hwy. 90 and find an alternate route if possible. Verot School Road at Hwy 90 will be closed until further notice.

UPDATE (8:30 a.m.):

Our media partners at KATC were live on the scene where it was reported that bottled water and cooking oil were among the items scattered on the ground near the wreckage.

Traffic on Verot is currently blocked near the Thruway as police officers are rerouting motorists to an alternate route.

A photo from Facebook user Jude Domingue seemed to confirm calls that we received at the radio station about an accident involving a train and an 18-wheeler around 7 a.m. Monday morning.

Traffic updates confirm an accident with injuries reported in the 700 block of Verot School Road.

Facebook user Tra Dupuis told us traffic wasn't bad on Evangeline Thruway but the majority of the delays were on Verot School Road as traffic trying to get onto the Thruway was brought to a halt due to the crash.
