METAIRIE, La. (AP) — A kitten rescued by the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway police on the bridge will have to have one of its legs amputated due to a severe injury.

Causeway General Manager Carlton Dufrechou (DOO'-fruh-shoh), tells the Times-Picayune (http://bit.ly/KLLvYL ) one of the kitten's rear legs was badly broken, and that a vet who worked on the animal said it would have to be amputated.

The kitten was found on the bridge around 8 a.m. Wednesday, during rush hour. Dufrechou says it isn't known how the kitten got there, but that it might have been discarded on the bridge by a motorist.

Police Chief Nick Congemi told Durechou that the kitten was friendly and did not have fleas, which indicates that it was perhaps a pet at one time.
