Lafayette Consolidated Government's compost facility is temporarily out of compost due to the prolonged drought. Allied Waste collects yard waste from the 53,000 households served by city-parish government and grinds it up, but it needs rainfall to decompose into a nutrient-rich soil compost. Environmental Quality Manager Mark Pope says once the city receives adequate rainfall to allow the current waste to decompose, the compost will be available again.
