The Lafayette, La. NCAA Softball Regional gets underway on Friday at Lamson Park with two games on the schedule.

The regional is a double-elimination format, with the finals scheduled for Sunday.

Louisiana’s Ragin’ Cajun softball team, the #6-overall national seed, is the top-seed in the tournament, followed by the Texas Longhorns, the Mississippi Bulldogs, and the Texas Southern Tigers.

After the top-seed in each regional, there are no official 2-4 seeds, however most would agree that Texas is the #2-seed, with Mississippi St. the three-seed, and Texas Southern the four-seed.

Louisiana, who won the regular season, as well as the postseason Sun Belt Conference Championships, will go into the regional with an overall record of 44-8-1.

The Cajuns, who are a national seed for the first time in program history, is entering their 24th regional in 25 years, and will be hosting a regional for the second time since the Super Regional format began in 2005, and first time since 2012.

Louisiana is ranked 11th, nationally, in the latest USA Today/NFCA top 25 poll.

Texas brings in a record of 33-21 into the regional. The Longhorns finished third in the Big XII Conference this year, with a 12-6 record.

Texas, a Women's College World Series qualifier last year, will be participating in their 15th regional in program history.

Mississippi St. will enter the regional with an overall record of 38-19, including a 10-14 league mark, which placed them in seventh place in the SEC. The Bulldogs will be making their 11th regional appearance.

Texas Southern is currently 31-18, while finishing SWAC play with a record of 16-2. The Tigers are playing in their first-ever regional.

The first game on Friday will feature Texas taking on Mississippi St. at 3 pm.

That game will be followed by a match-up between Louisiana and Texas Southern at 6 o'clock.

The two winners will meet in a winners bracket game on Saturday at noon, while the two losers fall into an elimination match-up at 3 o'clock on Saturday.
