Lafayette Streets Blocked During Police Search for Burglary Suspects
Lafayette, LA (KPEL News) - Listeners to radio stations in the Lafayette Townsquare Media group began calling early Wednesday morning, curious about what was happening on Congress Street. Several police cars were congregated near the intersection with St. Mary, and Lafayette Police were blocking some of the roads.
As you can imagine, such activity is inconvenient, at least, and alarming at best. Our team reached out to LPD to find out what was happening. We found out that Lafayette Police officers were looking for burglary suspects.
According to information from officials, they received a call at about 5:30 Wednesday morning about three people who were wearing hoodies breaking into vehicles in the 1000 block of Oaklawn Avenue, which is a block north of West Congress in Lafayette. A contingent of officers arrived with K9 and began canvassing the area, looking for the suspects.
Officers were able to find 2 of the 3 they believe were involved in the vehicle burglaries. One adult and one juvenile were arrested.
Lafayette Police say they are still working the case and trying to determine the identity of the third suspect.
As a reminder, law enforcement officials across south Louisiana are asking everyone to make sure their car doors are locked at all times and that no valuables, especially firearms, are left in the vehicle.
This is a developing story, and the KPEL News Team is working to provide additional coverage for Acadiana. Updates will be shared as they become available, so download the KPEL News app and subscribe to breaking news alerts to get the latest information sent directly to your mobile device.
