Louisiana Has 8th Most Underprivileged Children
While Louisiana doesn't hold the top spot overall, we do rank in the top ten when it comes to states with the most underprivileged children.
According to a press release from the finance website WalletHub, Louisiana comes in number eight when comes to underprivileged children across the nation.
As spokesperson Diana Boss points out, one of the reasons for even more unpredictable financial security for children is because of the coronavirus pandemic.
WalletHub's assessment takes a look at all fifty states along with the District of Columbia when deciding where each state falls in their rankings. Even the United States of America is listed as the seventh-highest state when it comes to kids living in poverty when based on all the economically-developed countries
According to officials with WalletHub, there were twenty-seven different metrics that were used to determine which state's the most privileged children and the states where children are in most need across the country. Texas is ranked thirty-first, so they are doing much better than kids in our state. Mississippi on the other hand, is second in the nation when it comes to underprivileged children.
The following is a list of the some of the things WalletHub investigated to come to their rankings:
- Access to free healthcare
- Access to technology
- Access to affordable food
- Share of maltreated children
- Child food-insecurity rate
- Share of children in households below the poverty level
- Single-parent households
- Infant mortality rate
- Highest child and youth homeless rate
- Share of children in foster care
