St. Landry Parish schools will have to make some major cuts over the next few weeks. The layoffs are in light of the parish's ongoing financial difficulties.

According to Interim Superintendent Joseph Cassimere, 182 people will be cut from the system. He says that 71 positions will be cut by April 30th and another 111 by May 22nd. He recommended the job cuts to the St. Landry Parish School Board.

The short-term effect of the layoffs will be a savings to the school system of about $290,000. The long term effects of these cuts will save the parish about $6.7 million.
