BASTROP, La. (AP) — A Mississippi-based chicken processing company plans to open a plant in Bastrop that will create 300 jobs.

The plan by Hazlehurst-based DG Foods Ltd. was confirmed Thursday to The Associated Press by Kay King, head of the Morehouse Parish economic development agency. Gov. Bobby Jindal also confirmed the project to The News-Star of Monroe in an interview.

The company refused to discuss its plan before a formal announcement scheduled for noon in Bastrop.

King says the project will provide a needed boost to the Bastrop area following the 2008 closure of an International Paper mill. That company had been Morehouse Parish's largest employer with 550 jobs.
