BASTROP, La. (AP) — The Conservation Fund says it has bought more than 2,300 acres of mixed farm and timberland for the Upper Ouachita National Wildlife Refuge in north Louisiana.

Spokeswoman Anne Barrett says the move completes U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to add 3,905 acres to the 42,594-acre refuge that runs along the Ouachita River in Union and Morehouse parishes.

She says the acreage sold by W. Elton Kennedy was the largest privately owned area within the refuge's boundaries.

Officials say tens of thousands of migratory ducks and geese, including mallards, pintails, wood ducks and snow geese, visit the refuge every year to rest, forage and breed.
