N.O. Cop Who Admited Lying To Grand Jury Resigns
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A New Orleans police sergeant who admitted lying to the grand jury probing a deadly police shooting after Hurricane Katrina has resigned from the department.
A department spokesman said Sgt. Purnella Simmons — a 29-year veteran — resigned Monday, but he didn't give a reason for her decision.
Simmons was a key prosecution witness in the case against five current or former officers charged in the shooting death of 31-year-old Henry Glover.
Simmons testified that fabricated material was added to a report she wrote on the shooting. But she said she initially lied to the grand jury by taking responsibility for writing the entire report.
Lt. Travis McCabe and former Lt. Robert Italiano are on trial for allegedly falsifying the report.
