The Lafayette Parish School Board will allow the new board the make the decision on who to hire as the permanent superintendent for the school system.

On the same night it appointed Burnell LeJeune as interim superintendent, the board unanimously agreed that a proper search would take time and to allow the new board to tackle that responsibility. Former superintendent Dr. Pat Cooper was hired after a seven month search.

“In six weeks, you’re going to be having seven new board members sworn in, and I personally would feel very uncomfortable trying to decide the fate of the new superintendent before that first Wednesday in January,” outgoing board member Kermit Bouillion said. “I think this is a quest for the new board.”

Outgoing board member Greg Awbrey said the new board could wait until the summer to begin the search.
