Getting back to work on a statewide basis might not be the right approach. That's the message from State Senator Sharon Hewitt of Slidell who wants to let parishes make their own decisions on when it's best to start opening back up.

Hewitt says the Governor’s preference to issue stay at home orders on a statewide basis is not working for areas of the state with low case counts.

The stay at home order is set to end April 30th, but New Orleans has already extended the order locally until at least May 16th. Hewitt wants you to sign her petition encouraging the Governor to implement President Trump’s plan for reopening locally. Click here to sign the petition.

Governor Edwards says at this point he has no plan to let parishes open before the stay at home order ends, or to allow parishes to relax restrictions more than others.
He does plan on relaxing some of the restrictions after April 30th. He will likely announce that plan over the weekend or on Monday.

Hewitt tells KEEL News Louisiana is diverse and each of our 64 parishes is unique. "COVID-19's impact on Louisiana is affecting each of our parishes and regions differently. We believe the meaningful reopening of our state's economy should reflect that. A localized approach is precisely what President Donald Trump has recommended, but our Governor has said this is not under consideration."
