The Lafayette PRIDE Guide has been revised to include updated information on proper waste disposal, recycling information, and other useful information on environmental programs, which the general public can get directly involved with, according to the manager of Lafayette Consolidated Government’s Environmental Quality Division.

“The PRIDE Guide is 18 pages of useful information that the general public can use to promote the best possible environment right here at home in Lafayette Parish,” said Mark Pope.

According to Pope, the most recent version of the  PRIDE Guide is the fourth edition.  The booklet was first published in 2004.   The Environmental Quality Division compiles the information contained in the booklet, and with each revision has added new information as well as verifying the accuracy of information contained in the previous edition, Pope said.

“Since the first edition, we’ve added lots of education information such as how to properly maintain an individual sewage septic system. People sometimes neglect proper maintenance of their individual septic systems, and that results in a discharge of improperly treated sewage into our waterways, which is harmful to the environment,” he said.

Other topics covered in the PRIDE Guide include where to dispose of old tires, where to bring used motor oil to be recycled, and where to bring rechargeable batteries to be recycled.

Many of the locations listed in the PRIDE Guide to dispose of waste or bring recyclable material do not charge for their services. Some services, Pope points out, such as a construction and demolition debris disposal sites that are listed in the booklet, will charge for the services they offer.

The PRIDE Guide can be downloaded by going online to lafayettela.gov; then select “Quick Links”; then select “Make Lafayette Greener,” and from there the link to the Lafayette PRIDE Guide will appear.

Hard-copies of the PRIDE Guide are available at Lafayette city hall and at Town Square Media at 1749 Bertrand Dr., as well as other locations around Lafayette. Call the Environmental Quality Division at 291-8529 for other locations or more information.
