Residents of the Gulf Coasts of Alabama and Florida are just now starting to realize the damage inflicted upon their hometowns as a result of Hurricane Sally. For many, yesterday was simply a day of assessing damage and applying for recovery aid. In some places, the power came back on. In other places, it won't come back for another several day.

Since so many of us love to vacation along the "Redneck Riviera" the sites and scenes of storm damage are all too familiar. Did you happen to catch the video captured by Live Storms Media/ Logan Poole?

I don't recall exactly how many hundreds of boxes of salt water taffy I have carried out the mouth of that shark during vacations in Gulf Shores. But as you can see from the video, it might be a few months before I can walk through the teeth of the shark again to get my goodies.

Officials in Gulf Shores and along that stretch of beach affected by the storm are asking you and me to stay away for the next ten days to two weeks. This should give crews time to assess the damage, begin the cleanup process, and ensure that your next visit to the beach will be safe.

Granted, it's going to take a lot longer than a week or two to get things back in ship shape along the Gulf Coast. The good news, I guess, is that the beach season unofficially ended over Labor Day. Maybe the offseason time can be used to make one of our favorite playgrounds even better than it was before. I certainly hope so.

I am also looking forward to picking up some salt water taffy and walk through the mouth of a giant shark in the next few months as well. That's when I will know that things are slowly but surely getting back to where we all want them to be.
