Jeremy Hidalgo said the Lafayette Parish School Board needed to get "back to the basics" and agreed with Lafayette Chamber of Commerce President Jason El Koubi's assessment that the board, with its current makeup, is "dysfunctional."

Hidalgo is running for the school board in District 9, which is currently occupied by Rae Trahan.

Hidalgo, who joined "Nathan & Bernie in the Morning," said Friday that taxpayers are "being shortchanged by the antics that are being played on the school board and in the school system," and he also said the system had become a "laughingstock."

"And basically, in District 9, we've just had a lack of positive representation for quite some time, and we need a change," Hidalgo said.

Hidalgo served for a year on the school system's Community Action Planning Committee, and it was during that time that he learned of the "need for facilities and infrastructure and technology and just all the things that we're truly lacking that I don't think is well known enough."

Hidalgo serves on the board of both the Broussard and Youngsville Chambers of Commerce, is involved in the Milton Civic Organization, graduated in 2013 from Leadership Lafayette, and he was an Outstanding Member of the Year award recipient from the Youngsville Chamber of Commerce.
