The state will not collect Christmas trees this year to help stop coastal erosion. Since 1991, the state would take old Christmas trees and use them as a fence to trap sediment and even build land along the coast. UNO coastal scientist Denise Reed says the program was good for making the public aware of coastal restoration efforts. Reed says the Christmas trees were not going to prevent coastal erosion. (The state is saving $175,000 by discontinuing the program.)
