This weekend is a quiet one in Acadiana since Mardi Gras celebrations haven't yet kicked into full gear, but as always, there's something to do in or around Lafayette.
The first time I attended the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, a lot of big names were on the schedule. The one I was most anticipating was Allen Toussaint. I was familiar with his work mainly because of the hits other artists had with his songs, and was eager to see him perform them. It's with tremendous sadness that I report he's left us.
The Great Acadian Awakening Music Festival is scheduled for the first weekend in October to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the arrival of what we now call our "Cajun" ancestors from the area known today as Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
The Bayou Vermilion Festival & Boat Parade is a celebration of and on the Bayou Vermilion that aims to increase awareness of the river as a viable source of recreation for Lafayette Parish and also serves as a fundraiser for the Bayou Vermilion District's efforts along the Vermilion.
Parking is easy. You can park at Cajun Field, and take the shuttle to downtown Lafayette. Service Chevrolet is sponsoring the shuttles again this year.
