Rare Two-Headed Snake Discovered—And OF COURSE It’s Venomous [VIDEO]
Two heads better than one? Not in this particular situation.
A very rare snake was discovered in northern Virginia, and if you're terrified at the sight of snakes, imagine seeing TWO of them at the same time. That's probably what the person who found this serpent thought he stumbled upon until he realized it was actually a rare two-headed baby copperhead that slithered into the yard.
Upon its discovery, the snake was turned over to a state herpetologist and identified as an Eastern Copperhead. Copperheads are responsible for the most venomous snake bites in America, but if there was any silver lining it would be that its venom is the least toxic so it's very seldom that you hear any fatal bites from a copperhead.
According to Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries own J.D. Kleopfer, it's tough for these snakes to survive.
Wild bicephalic snakes are exceptionally rare because they just don't live that long. Too many challenges living day to day with two heads.
Experts at the Wildlife Center of Virginia took radiographs to determine both heads were operative.
It appears as though the left head is more dominant -- it's generally more active and responsive to stimulus. Radiographs revealed that the two-headed snake has two tracheas (the left one is more developed), two esophaguses (the right one is more developed), and the two heads share one heart and one set of lungs. Based on the anatomy, it would be better for the right head to eat, but it may be a challenge since the left head appears more dominant.
While the baby is not available for public viewing, professionals who are caring for it say that if snake survives it could be donated to a zoo as an educational exhibit.
