79-year-old Hoa Minh Le of Henderson and 72-year-old Huynh Thi Tran of Amelia died on Friday evening after a truck collided head on with them on Interstate 10 near mile marker 67 (east of Jennings) in Acadia Parish.

According to a press release from Louisiana State Police, the pickup suffered a tire malfunction, causing the driver - 45-year-old Luis Martinez Pedro of Miami, Florida - to lose control and cross over from the westbound lane partially into the eastbound lane. As both drivers tried to steer clear of the other, they both wound up colliding in the median lane.

Everyone involved was wearing a seat belt. While Le and Tran were pronounced dead at the scene, Pedro was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.

The investigation of the crash continues as routine toxicology samples are being analyzed.

Spokesman Trooper Thomas Gossen points out this is the 27th death resulting from 21 fatal crashes investigated by Troop I in 2021.
