UL Softball Falls To Texas St.
A long win streak came to an end for the 19th-ranked Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns softball team on Saturday afternoon, after falling to the Texas St. Bobcats in the final game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference weekend series in San Marcos, Texas.
Texas St. scored a run in the bottom half of the 8th inning to defeat Louisiana, 2-1, salvaging the final game of the series.
The Cajuns won both games on Friday, capturing the first game, 8-1, before taking the second game, 12-4, in six innings.
Louisiana ended up outscoring Texas St. in the three games, 21-7, combined.
The loss put an end to the Cajuns’ 16-game win streak, as well as their Sun Belt Conference win streak, which ended at 21 games.
The two triumphs on Saturday did guarantee Louisiana their 34th-consecutive series victory, a school and Sun Belt Conference record.
The Cajuns haven’t lost a league series since 2013, when they dropped 2-of-3 to South Alabama in Mobile, Alabama.
Texas St. got on the scoreboard first, scoring a runs in the bottom half of the second inning, when Bailee Carter drove home run with a two-out single, to give them a 1-0 lead.
Louisiana tied the game in the top half of the 5th inning, scoring an unearned run, when Hayley Hayden drove home a run with a clutch two-out single, to make it 1-1.
The Bobcats won it in the bottom half of the 8th inning, Carter opened the inning with a double, before scoring on a grounder back to the pitching circle Jaelyn Young, giving them the 1-run victory.
Louisiana, who evened Texas St. in the hit column, 4-4, was led at the plate by Hayden, who went 2-for-4, including a run batted in.
Jodi Paige Williams (6-3) recorded the win for the Bobcats, tossing 3 innings of shutout relief.
Alyssa Denham (13-2) suffered the loss for the Cajuns, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits over 7.1 innings.
With the win, Texas St. improved to 31-10, overall, and 12-5 in league play, while Louisiana dropped to 32-6, and 14-1, respectively.
The Cajuns now lead the all-time series against the Bobcats, 29-4.
UL returns to action on Wednesday, when they travel to College Station, Texas to take on the 5th-ranked Texas A&M Aggies in a non-conference tilt.
