UL Softball Stays Unbeaten With Win Over Oregon St.
The 16th-ranked Louisiana Ragin' Cajun softball team stayed unbeaten on the young 2018 season on Thursday.
Louisiana defeated the Oregon St. Beavers, 9-4, in a non-conference single game at Lamson Park.
The Cajuns scored 8-unanswered runs from innings 2-4, to help them to the win.
The triumph marked the 6th-straight win for UL to begin the year.
Oregon St. got on the scoreboard first, plating a run in the top half of the second inning, when Missy Nunes belted a one-out solo home run, her third of the season, to give them a 1-0 lead.
Louisiana grabbed the lead for good in the bottom half of the second inning, scoring three runs, including a run-scoring single off the bat of Kourtney Gremillion, a safety-squeeze RBI from Brittany Rodriguez, and a two-out RBI single off the bat of Alissa Dalton, to grab a 3-1 advantage.
The Cajuns put up two more runs in the bottom half of the third inning, including a safety-squeeze run batted in by Kourtney Gremillion, as well as an unearned run, to widen their lead to 5-1.
UL made it 8-unanswered runs in bottom half of the 4th inning, with three more runs, including a two-out run-scoring single by Kara Gremillion, as well as a two-out, 2-run homer by Lexie Comeaux, her first of the year, to give them a commanding 8-1 lead.
The Beavers, however, refusing to give up, scored three runs in the top half of the 5th inning, courtesy of a three-run homer by Shelby Weeks, to trim the deficit to 8-4.
The Cajuns added an insurance run in the bottom half of the 6th inning, when Alissa Dalton singled to begin the frame, prior to later crossing the plate on a steal of home, to make it 9-4.
That would be all UL would need, as they went on to the 5-run triumph.
Louisiana, who outhit Oregon St., 9-8, was led at the plate by Alissa Dalton, who went 3-for-4, while Kara Gremillion and Kourtney Gremillion collected two hits apiece, and Comeaux homered.
Summer Ellyson (2-0) recorded the win in the circle for the Cajuns, tossing 4.2 innings, while allowing 4 runs on 7 hits.
Kylee Jo Trahan recorded her first save of the season, pitching the final 2.2 innings, without allowing a run.
Mariah Mazon (1-2) suffered the loss for the Beavers, allowing 8 runs on 8 hits in 3.2 innings of work.
With the win, Louisiana improved to 6-0, while Oregon St. fell to 4-2.
The Cajuns return to the diamond on Saturday, playing host to the 2nd-ranked Florida Gators in a non-conference doubleheader, representing the first two games of a three-game series.
First-pitch for game one of the twinbill is set for 3 o'clock.
