Up to 40-50 vehicles were involved in multiple crashes early Tuesday morning (Dec. 17), forcing the closure of the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge in both directions.

UPDATE:

The Causeway Bridge is reopened after nearly seven hours due to multiple crashes that shut down traffic in both directions Tuesday morning.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Officials report that the chain-reaction crashes occurred after dense fog blanketed the area, creating hazardous driving conditions. Authorities estimate that it could take several hours before the bridge reopens, likely sometime this afternoon.

An EMS source told WVUE FOX 8 that multiple injuries have been reported, and several people were transported to nearby hospitals. While the extent of the injuries is not yet known, emergency responders remain on the scene assisting those involved.

One of the largest crashes occurred near mile marker 18 and involved at least 11 vehicles. Another crash further south included three vehicles. Harrowing video captured from the scene shows a chaotic and dangerous situation, with vehicles mangled and crushed together in the aftermath.

Officials are urging drivers to avoid the Causeway Bridge and seek alternate routes for the remainder of the day while crews work to clear the wreckage and reopen the bridge safely.

This is a developing story. Updates will be provided as more details become available.
