President Obama says embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki has resigned.

In a statement at the White House, Obama praised Shinseki, a retired Army general. Obama said he accepted the resignation with regret.

Obama noted that people are being held accountable for the growing crisis at the VA.

VA health clinics have been accused of falsifying records to hide systemic scheduling problems across the U.S.

Officials are investigating whether scheduling problems at the Phoenix facility may have contributed to the deaths of up to 40 veterans.
