An international conference for researchers of a rare, disabling disorder that strikes infant and toddler girls is coming to the United States for the first time in 2012 — and it will be in New Orleans.

Kathryn Kissam, of Baton Rouge, is chairwoman of the board for the International Rett Syndrome Foundation. She tells The Advocate that they expect researchers and families affected by Rett Syndrome from around the world.

She says girls with the genetic disorder develop normally for six to 18 months. Then they lose what they've learned, including speech, use of their hands, and ability to move around.

Dates and sites have yet to be announced, but Kissam says it probably will be in the fall.
