A Dulac couple who nursed a wounded otter back to health at their bayou country home in Terrebonne Parish say they are heartbroken because the animal is now being held at the zoo in New Orleans.

Zoo officials say they can't return the animal to Teddy Chaisson and Katina Bergeron because of state Wildlife and Fisheries rules that bar people from keeping wild animals.

The couple took in the young otter, named Chip, last year after a neighbor found him injured. Chip had the run of their land, swimming in the bayou and coming in and out of their home. But when they dropped him off at Audubon Zoo for treatment of a recent illness, zoo officials said they couldn't give him back.
