BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — A group of two dozen state lawmakers is calling on the Board of Regents to give them a plan for scaling back state college spending. And they want the plan soon.

The lawmakers — all members of the state House of Representatives, most Republican — asked Thursday for the plan to envision a college and university structure statewide that is smaller and has better results.

Covington Rep. John Schroder says the debate needs to shift from "raising revenue" like tuition and fees on students to improving a system that he says is broken and too big for Louisiana.

The call from the group of lawmakers comes a day after the LSU System presented a series of proposals to Regents that would involve raising tuition and fees on students to offset budget cuts to colleges next year.
