Manslaughter In Mix For Ex-Cop In Katrina Shooting

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A jury will be allowed to consider whether a former New Orleans police officer committed murder or manslaughter when he fatally shot a man during Hurricane Katrina's aftermath.

U.S. District Judge Lance Africk said Monday that he will instruct jurors they can consider the less serious charge of manslaughter when they weigh the case against David Warren, one of five current or former officers charged in the death of 31-year-old Henry Glover.

Warren's attorney, Julian Murray, objected and expressed concern jurors could reach a "compromise" verdict and convict him of the lesser charge.

The jury is hearing closing arguments Monday after 12 days of testimony.
