COVINGTON, La. (AP) — A trio of boys — two 6-year-olds and a 3-year-old — were found with stolen goods after a man returned home to find them in his house.

Covington Police officers found the children playing across from the house when they arrived on Saturday. According to a police news release, as officers approached the boys, one of them pulled out what looked like a handgun and put it on the ground. Authorities say the gun was a BB gun, but looked like a real pistol.

The children had stolen items in their possession, including candy, a board game, money and cigarettes.

A cousin was apparently baby-sitting the children while their mother, 26-year-old Sarah Davenport, attended a parenting class. Officers informed her that children under 10 could not be arrested but she was responsible for their actions.

Capt. Jack West says charges may be brought against the mother pending further investigation.
