Lafayette officials are hinting at the idea of a tax swap for funding public safety. Two property taxes that help fund local fire and police departments, would be switched out with a half cent sales tax.

Chief Financial Officer Lorrie Toups says that this would bring in an increase of about $10 million or more. Lafayette Fire Chief Robert Benoit says that the city needs to build and staff two new fire stations and raise pay for firefighters.

Chief Administrative Officer Dee Stanley says that the no one is going to push the proposal, but just offer it for review instead.
