The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's annual "Christmas Tree Drop" into Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge happened yesterday. Over 8,000 trees were dropped by the Louisiana National Guard’s A Company, 1st Assault Helicopter Battalion, 244th Aviation Regiment, to help ease the eroding coastline.

According to WDSU in New Orleans, Officials say the trees will get a new life as breakwaters in refuge impoundments. They say the breakwaters slow wave and water movement, trap silt and encourage the growth of marsh grasses. Organizers are confident that once again, the annual recycling project will help restore the delicate eco system that helps protect New Orleans against storms. It also provides a habitat for native wildlife. I say this is a win win for the great state of Louisiana! Check out the actual Christmas tree drop in the video below.
