A bill authored by Louisiana Sen. Bill Cassidy, and Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), is aimed to reform the U.S. mental health care system.

Cassidy discussed the Mental Health Reform Act with KPEL's Rob and Bernie Friday morning.

According to the National Council on Behavioral Health, the bill contains a lot of "important and long-sought" priorities for the mental healthcare industry.

If passed, the Mental Health Reform Act of 2015 will:

  • Clarify billing procedures and allow same-day billing on mental health services.
  • Make modifications to HIPPA for mental health services.
  • Codify the 5% of funding that is set aside for early intervention activities.
  • Require the Government Accountability Office to conduct a paperwork reduction study.
