City Council Approves Rec Center Plan, Parish Council Responds

An ordinance that would split the funding for Lafayette Parks and Recreation between the city and the parish gained approval after a long discussion. The measure, by Councilmembers Liz Webb Hebert and Nanette Cook, aims to keep 4 rec centers on Lafayette's north side open.

The move would also save 37 Parks and Rec jobs that were slated to be eliminated at the end of the current fiscal year. The plan was opposed by Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory who has said on KPEL that the department does not "live within its means".

According to KATC, the Lafayette Parish Council will introduce its own ordinance that would give $200,000 to keep the rec centers open. The city council measure will be up for final adoption in two weeks.
