A Denham Springs, Louisiana, Police Officer was chasing a suspect on foot when he was struck by a vehicle on Friday. According to the authorities, the officer was pursuing the suspect on foot in the eastbound lane when he was hit by a car by accident.

According to WBRZ, the Denham Springs Police Officer was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Baton Rouge. The driver of the car was trying to avoid the suspect running through traffic lanes on Interstate 12 westbound at the walker exit. While attempting to swerve around the suspect, the driver unintentionally hit the Police Officer.

Traffic is backed up heavily at the Walker exit, which is now closed. According to WBRZ, as of 3:15 p.m. on Friday, a portion of Interstate 12 is still closed. Congestion is approaching 2 miles.

At this time the status of the officer is unknown. A police spokesperson asked that the community please keep the officer and his family in their prayers.

Chief Walker wants to make it known how much he appreciates all of our law enforcement partners along with all medical personnel who responded to the incident. We ask for prayers for our officer and his family right now
