A Florida teen has gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

I must be 100% clear with everyone before I even begin writing this when I say that I can't believe I'm actually writing this. When I saw the story yesterday, I honestly thought it was fake, photoshopped or all of the above.

Sadly, it wasn't—so here we are.

An 18-year-old Florida high school student by the name of Noah Crowley is apologizing for a racist "promposal" sign that read:

If I was black, I’d be picking cotton, but I’m white so I’m picking u 4 prom?

Crowley held up the sign in a Snapchat photo that was meant to ask a fellow Riverview High School student to be his prom date at the upcoming dance on May 5. According to the Huffington Post, Crowley's invite was met with "heart-eyed emoji" from the recipient.

Unfortunately, no one else felt "heart-eyed" about his sign. His fellow students are reportedly "disgusted" with his actions. Senior Anton Kernohan said,

It shows that racism is still alive and well in our society, and it shows that racism is still alive in my generation, and it is something that we as the youth will have to continue to fight against.

According to reports, Crowley apologized on Monday morning saying he didn't intend to "offend anyone."

Anyone who knows me ... knows that that’s not how we truly feel. It was a completely [sic] joke and it went too far. After reading the texts and Snapchat’s, I truly see how I have offended people and I’m sorry.

Not everyone was buying his apology, and officials with the school district told reporters that Crowley's sign was under investigation.

We want to make everyone aware of a student’s social media post that has caused a very concerning situation. It involves one of our seniors and his ‘promposal’ to another student. It was racial in nature and administration became aware of it last night. Many who saw the post are understandably upset with its contents as well as the subsequent commentary to the post. Riverview High School absolutely does not condone or support the message conveyed in this post.

It's sad that in 2018 we're still seeing things like this. It's even more disturbing that anyone could find this to be remotely "funny" or some sort of "inside joke."

Do you think he should face any punishment from school, or is his public shaming on the internet enough?
