Former Police Officer Sentenced For Coverup
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A former New Orleans Police officer, who pleaded guilty to helping to cover up the deadly shootings of unarmed civilians on the Danziger Bridge after Hurricane Katrina, has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison.
The sentence imposed Wednesday by U.S. District Judge Sarah Vance against Michael Hunter was the maximum allowed plus nine months above the maximum recommended guideline.
Hunter is one of five former police officers who have pleaded guilty in the shootings a week after Katrina hit. Six other current or former officers also have been indicted on charges stemming from the shootings and alleged cover-up.
Police shot and killed two people and wounded four others on the Danziger Bridge less than a week after the August 2005 storm.
