Governor Bobby Jindal Seeks To Block Common Core
BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Gov. Bobby Jindal is seeking to derail Louisiana's use of standardized tests tied to the Common Core education standards through executive order and contract suspensions.
In a series of back and forth maneuvers Wednesday, Jindal struck at the Department of Education's plans to use Common Core-linked tests known as PARCC for students in third through eighth grades.
The governor issued an executive order requiring competitive bidding for public school standardized tests, which Jindal said would keep Louisiana from using PARCC.
But Superintendent of Education John White replied by saying his department could purchase the test questions under an existing contract.
So, the Jindal administration then announced it plans to suspend the existing testing contract White planned to use.
White said his lawyers will determine how to proceed.
