Governor Edwards Voices Concern Over Rising COVID-19 Cases
The recent uptick in COVID-19 cases in Louisiana has prompted Governor John Bel Edwards to advise you and me that it might be time for a "gut check". I don't think the Governor means we need a colonoscopy but the way some people have been acting during this pandemic that procedure might offer a clue as to where their head has been.
Since June 10th the state has reported 4,200 positive cases of COVID-19. This includes an adjustment for backlog cases which is why the numbers might seem a little different than what was previously reported. Neighboring states are also reporting an increase in cases too. And yes, it most likely can be attributed to more and more people getting out and about as coronavirus restrictions have been lifted.
Assistant Health Secretary Alex Billioux offered another sobering statistic concerning the rise of COVID-19 cases in the state. 91% of the newly reported cases are not nursing home related and most of the new cases can be linked to social gatherings or households.
When asked about the spread of COVID-19 at gatherings such as protests, Billioux told the Louisiana Radio Network:
People have to weigh the importance of expressing themselves and raising concerns about the deadly effects of racism and protecting from COVID. I think especially if these protests are done outside there is a way to do both
Both Billioux and Governor Edwards are encouraging you and me to continue to follow best practices as outlined by the CDC. Among those practices are social distancing, wearing masks when out in public, and continued handwashing and hand sanitizer use.
The Governor is expected to announce early next week if and when Louisiana might be able to move into Phase 3 of the reopening plan. Based on current information and trends, that move to Phase 3 is appearing less likely, at least at this point in time.
