More ‘Harry Potter’ Movies? J.K. Rowling Adapting ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’
It's been more than two years since 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2' hit theaters, thereby completing the eight-film series adapted from J.K. Rowling's bestselling books. But it turns out we're not through yet with the land of witches and wizards. Warner Bros. is adapting 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,' a companion book to the 'Harry Potter' universe, for a new film series.
'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' was written by Rowling as an encyclopedia of all the magical beasts that inhabited the world. This film series will mark Rowling's new venture into screenwriting and will be an original tale centered around the book's fictional author, Newt Scamander. In a statement, Rowling said:
Although it will be set in the worldwide community of witches and wizards where I was so happy for seventeen years, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world. The laws and customs of the hidden magical society will be familiar to anyone who has read the Harry Potter books or seen the films, but Newt’s story will start in New York, seventy years before Harry’s gets underway.
In addition to the movies, Warner Bros. is also planning on adapting 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' across their gaming and consumer product platforms. The studio is adamant about further expanding the 'Harry Potter' brand through theme parks, digital content and the like.
The 'Harry Potter' film series made more than $7.7. billion dollars at the worldwide box office and stands as the highest-grossing franchise of all time. Rowling has since moved on to other writing projects, like 'The Casual Vacancy' and 'The Cuckoo's Calling,' the latter which she wrote using the pseudonym Robert Galbraith. So don't worry, fans, there's more wizarding adventures to come!
