Hunters For The Hungry Clean Out Your Freezer Day Is Sunday
This might be the ultimate win-win-win for residents in South Louisiana. I am speaking of the annual Clean Out Your Freezer Day with Hunters For the Hungry. Why is it a win-win-win?
Well, it's a win because hunters get to enjoy being in the outdoors and harvesting game during hunting season. Families reclaim a lot of room in their freezers by clearing out and donating game from the previous hunting season. That would be win number two.
Win number three is the fact that the donated meat is given to help feed hungry families and individuals across Louisiana who might not have the opportunity to have a meal, much less a meal made from wild game harvested in the state.
Here's how you can help. If you have frozen game that has been properly stored in your freezer and you'd like to make a donation all you have to do is bring those frozen items to any of the Hunters for the Hungry drop off locations on Sunday between 10 am and 3 pm.
Lafayette – UL Cajun Field 2351 W. Congress St. main drop site
Opelousas – Giles Nissan, 4383 I-49 service road
Youngsville – First Assembly of God, 3555 Verot School Rd.
Broussard – Chops Specialty Meats, 1019 Albertson Parkway
Eunice – Eunice Fire Station, 100 Park Ave.
New Iberia – Community First Bank, 1101 E. Admiral Doyle Dr.
Abbeville – Ray Chevrolet, 716 W. Summers Dr.
Carencro – MC Taxidermy, 3829 NW Evangeline Thruway
There are other drop-off locations in other communities around the state. You can find a list of those right here.
Last year over 8,000 pounds of meat was donated during this annual event. Maybe this year we can make it even more. That means more room in the freezer for this year's harvest and fewer hungry families and individuals in Louisiana. Proceeds from this year's event in Acadiana will be distributed via The Refinery in Opelousas.
