I think most of us are still processing the news that Dolly Parton passed away this week. She was 80, and honestly, it felt like she'd be around forever. That's kind of the thing about our country music legends, isn't it? We grow up with their voices on the radio, in our trucks, at family gatherings, and it's easy to forget they're just as human as the rest of us.

Dolly's death got me thinking about just how many icons this genre has lost since the year 2000. Johnny Cash. Waylon Jennings. George Jones. Merle Haggard. Loretta Lynn. Glen Campbell. Kenny Rogers. Charley Pride. The list goes on, and it's a long one.

Some We Saw Coming, Others That Stopped Us Cold

Some of these losses hit us hard because we saw them coming, a long illness, a public battle with cancer, a farewell tour that we knew was really goodbye. Others were sudden and shocking, plane crashes, car accidents, deaths that stopped us cold in the middle of an ordinary day. And a few, like Toby Keith and Kris Kristofferson, felt like they happened just yesterday even though they're already a couple years behind us now.

What strikes me looking back over 25 years of loss is how much these artists shaped who we are here in Louisiana. Country music isn't just background noise for us, it's the soundtrack to cookouts, to long drives down back roads, to Sunday mornings and Friday nights. Then there are those special six hours on Saturdays when Classic Country Saturday Night takes over radios across the state. When we lose one of these voices, we're not just losing a musician. We're losing a piece of our own story.
