LOUISIANA - A child who was abducted in East Texas was found safe in Louisiana Sunday morning (8/16/26) after investigators tracked the vehicle believed to be involved in the abduction.

How did law enforcement track the suspect's vehicle? Using Flock cameras.

According to the Sabine County Sheriff's Office, Flock and Vigilant license plate reader cameras played an important role in helping investigators locate the vehicle and safely recover the child.

Obviously Flock cameras have been a hot topic of debate in Acadiana and Louisiana over the past few months, but does this possibly make you think differently about them?

Let's talk about it...

Flock Cameras Helped Track The Suspect's Vehicle

The child was reported missing during the early morning hours of Sunday, Aug. 16. What followed was a multi-agency search that crossed the Texas-Louisiana border.

Fortunately, the investigation ended with the child being found safely and a 60-year-old Pineland man being taken into custody.

The Sabine County Sheriff's Office said Flock and Vigilant license plate reader cameras were used to help identify and track the suspect's vehicle.

Rather than law enforcement having to rely solely on eyewitness accounts or manually search for the specific vehicle, license plate reader technology, flock cameras, authorities were able to track the suspect's vehicle and thankfully find the abducted child fairly quickly.

Once authorities identified the vehicle, officers were able to stop it and take the suspect into custody in Louisiana near the Mississippi state line according to KTRE.com.

Most importantly, the child was recovered safely.

Pineland, Texas Man Arrested

Sabine County Sheriff George Griffith obtained an arrest warrant for Roger Smith Jr., 60, of Pineland, according to the sheriff's office.

The investigation involved multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Sabine County Sheriff's Office and Louisiana State Police.

How Flock Cameras Are Becoming A Law Enforcement Tool

Flock cameras are designed to capture information about vehicles passing through specific locations, allowing law enforcement agencies to search for vehicles associated with an investigation. In this case, investigators were specifically looking for a vehicle connected to a missing child investigation, and because of the Flock technology, they were able to find the vehicle and recover the child.

Why Are Flock Cameras Controversial?

Flock cameras are automated license plate readers. They capture vehicle information, including license plates and other information like the vehicle's make and color, and the cameras allow investigators to search that information during investigations, like what happened this past weekend in Texas and Louisiana.

Because of Flock cameras, an abducted child was found quickly and was safely returned to her family, so why would anyone have a problem with that?

Well, clearly no one would have an issue with this technology helping to recover an abducted child. The controversy comes down to privacy concerns and how much information is being collected, and who can access it.

Critics of Flock cameras have real concerns about mass surveillance, data sharing, and misuse. And, these concerns are certainly not unwarranted.

There have been recent cases involving allegations that law enforcement officers improperly used Flock systems to track people, like ex for personal reasons. Flock has responded by announcing additional auditing and accountability measures.

The question is...now that we're hearing about Flock cameras helping law enforcement recover an abducted child so quickly, does it begin to possibly change our opinions about them?

The parents of this missing child are certainly grateful for the technology.
