After a cyber attack on Louisiana's Office of Motor Vehicles in late May of 2023, an investigation into the hack has revealed that more information was exposed by the hackers than previously thought.

Louisiana OMV Cyber Attack

On May 31, 2023, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles fell victim to a data breach that exposed Louisiana resident's sensitive information such as "name, date of birth, address, social security number, and vehicle registration" according to KLFY.

The data breach involved the large data transferring platform called MOVEit.

After conducting an investigation into the breach, it has been discovered that more information was exposed by the hackers than previously thought.

From the OMV press release -

"Upon learning of the incident, immediate measures were taken to secure the MOVEIt environment utilized to transfer files.

A thorough investigation was conducted, and it was determined that there was the unauthorized acquisition of and access to, OMV files in the MOVEIt environment."

According to KLFY, the Louisiana Office of Motor Vehicles is offering free credit monitoring and identity theft protection from LifeLock for a year to any residents who believe their personal information may have been compromised.

"Through thorough analysis, OMV determined that the files involved in the incident contained the personal information of individuals who applied for and/or were issued a Louisiana driver's license, identification card, and/or vehicle registration.

The information varied by individual but included name and one or more of the following: address, date of birth, Social Security number, driver's license, learner's permit, or identification card number, height, eye color, vehicle registration information, and handicap placard information."
