Surgical Castration Ordered Under Louisiana Law

As part of the sentence, Decuir was ordered to undergo surgical castration in addition to serving 30 years in prison with credit for time already served. He will also be required to register as a sex offender or child predator for the rest of his life.

Louisiana made national headlines in 2024 after becoming the first state to allow courts to order surgical castration for certain convicted child sex offenders when the victim is younger than 13 years old. The law officially took effect on August 1, 2024.

Under the law, the procedure must be carried out by a licensed physician through the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections, and a medical expert must first determine whether the offender is an appropriate candidate for surgery.

Prosecutors Detail The Sentence

According to the 23rd Judicial District Attorney’s Office, Assistant District Attorneys Lana Chaney and Adam Koenig prosecuted the case. Judge Steven Tureau presided over the proceedings.
