When Will Heavy Rain Hit The Lafayette Area

(KMDL-FM) The good news is that Louisiana and Acadiana aren't under any heat advisories today. It's been about a month and a half since we've been able to say that. The bad news, unfortunately, is that strong storms are moving southward through Louisiana, and that will affect the workday and the school day.

Showers And Storms Dominate Louisiana's Forecast on Thursday

As you can see, there are multiple thunderstorms descending southward toward the heart of Acadiana. The question isn't whether it will rain. The better questions are: when will it rain, how heavy will the rain be, and will there be severe weather and flooding?

Based on observations and forecast discussions, it does look as if the leading edge of the rain will move into the I-10 corridor just before sunrise. The heaviest of the weather, at least as it looks right now, should be moving into and along the I-10 corridor for much of the morning commute.

The National Weather Service Forecast Office in New Orleans has issued a special weather statement for storms moving through South Mississippi and into southeastern Louisiana. It does appear as though the heavier showers and storms will be generally east of I-49/US 190.

That doesn't mean that the areas west of those roadways won't see showers, storms, high winds, and frequent lightning in storms. However, the greatest threat of heavy rain does appear to be from the Lafayette area eastward.

Forecast rainfall amounts are generally a quarter of an inch to half an inch, but the potential for rainfall amounts of one or two inches is possible across much of Acadiana and South Louisiana.

The Weather Prediction Center suggests excessive rainfall, or downpours that outpace local drainage systems, will be possible from Lake Charles through Lafayette and Baton Rouge. Again, the greatest threat of those downpours as of right now appears to be during the morning hours of Thursday.

We're hoping sky conditions will improve by the time tonight's Lunar Eclipse unfolds in the sky above Louisiana. But we should caution you: there is still a threat of rain tonight, and many forecasters are suggesting a second round of showers early Friday morning.

Once this system moves through, the weekend should be sunny and hot, with only a threat of afternoon showers or thunderstorms.
