Louisiana has had a love affair with coffee since coffee was first made available to be loved. Many of you probably had your first sips of the "ol black water" when you were kids. You probably asked your mom to drop in a little sugar and a lot of milk to make the Cajun culinary classic "coffee milk".

A good cup of coffee has been the start-up fuel for Louisiana's farm families for centuries too. I remember my dad, who worked as a cotton insect researcher for the USDA, telling me a story about a farmer in Plaquemines Parish. My Pop stopped by to speak to the farmer about using one of his cotton fields for a USDA test. The farmer invited my dad in for coffee and it was the darkest thickest most syrup-like concoction my dad had ever tasted, but man was it good.

In today's rush "to here", rush "to there" world, a good cup of coffee has gone from being a luxury to being a necessity. That's why you see such long lines at the national, regional, and locally-owned coffee shops around town. People need to get their caffeine fix. However, the delivery method for that caffeine injection can come in a lot of different ways.

Some people like their coffee piping hot and black. Others like their coffee hot but with milk, cream, honey, or some other flavorings. Then there are those who choose to be cool with their coffee and they order it on ice. I have to admit, an iced coffee on a hot afternoon provides a lift and some refreshments all at the same time.

The only problem with the surge in coffee popularity across the nation is the fact that it keeps driving the price up. There was a time when Americans would frown mightily on a cup of coffee that cost more than a nickel. Meanwhile, today's cups of Joe run at least a few bucks up to double digits in dollars if you get it large enough and loaded enough.
