PETA Proposing Law Requiring Pet Owners to Walk Dogs 3 Times Per Day
LOUISIANA (KMDL-FM) - When you decide to become a pet owner, you also agree to take on the responsibility that comes along with it. When you become a dog owner, one of those responsibilities involves walking your dog, depending on you and your dog's living situation. Meaning, if your dog will be living on a farm or will have access to a large area of land, exercise for the your dog kind of takes care of itself.
Obviously, we all want to take the very best care of our dogs as we absolutely can, but animal rights activist group PETA is pushing for a new dog walking law that is raising quite a few eyebrows of dog owners in the Delaware area. That's right, a law, and if it passes, violators of the law could face big fines.
Could Louisiana be next?
Let's take a look at the law PETA is lobbying for and see what you think about it.
PETA Dog Walking Law
In December of 2025, PETA urged to Delaware state lawmakers the passage of “legislation requiring that dogs receive a minimum of three walks per day, with one walk being at least an hour long” according to housegop.delaware.gov.
PETA wants it written into law that dog owners be legally obligated to walk their dogs three times everyday, with one of the three walks being no shorter than 1 hour.

Clearly their is positive benefits for walking our dogs, both for our dogs and for us. That being said, many dog owners in the Delaware are not too happy about this possibly becoming state law, and pet owners around the U.S. are asking "If it passes in Delaware, could it happen in my state?"
Believe it or not, this proposed dog walking law actually has a precedent.
From housegop.delaware.gov -
The group (PETA) did not offer any suggestions on how such a law could be enforced. No U.S. state has a similar statute, although the city of Turin, Italy, reportedly has an ordinance imposing fines of up to 500 euros (approximately $580) for dog owners who fail to walk their canines at least three times daily.

PETA is currently pushing lawmakers for the same $580 fine for dog owners in Delaware found in violation.
Those opposed to PETA's proposal say this dog walking law is unenforceable and that it's unrealistic for dog owners with physical limitations or demanding schedules. Opponents also say the passing of such a law is an overreach of government power.
