Storm Threat Causes Changes in Louisiana Weekend Mardi Gras Plans

Last weekend Mardi Gras plans around many towns in Louisiana had to be postponed, moved, or canceled. The reason was a storm system that moved through the area bringing copious amounts of showers and storms to parade routes all across the Gulf South.

Unfortunately, this weekend forecasters are suggesting there might be a bit of a repeat as far as showers and storms are concerned. The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Lake Charles tells us that a rain threat will move into the state late Friday afternoon into Friday evening.

Those communities who have Mardi Gras Parades and plans for Friday night and during the day on Saturday should not experience any major weather interruptions. We can't rule out a passing shower but during that time frame showers will be less likely.

By Saturday night the rain threat across the area will jump to about 50% and the winds will pick up too. Wind can be a huge issue during Mardi Gras Parades as beads and other items can be blown back onto the parade route in front of vehicles and floats, so do be mindful of that during any parades on Saturday.

Sunday's forecast looks to be quite wet with at least a 70% probability of showers and storms during the day and extending into the evening on Sunday. This threat of inclement weather has already forced one Louisiana town to make a change of plans.

This notice was posted on the City of Jennings's Facebook Page on Wednesday. The notice announces the cancellation of the Jennings Children's Mardi Gras Parade on Sunday and the Chicken Run that was scheduled too.

However, many other events planned for Sunday will go on as scheduled. The gumbo cookoff, the market, the children's activities, and the costume contest will be held. The new location is the Fairgrounds Arena.
