Books-A-Million in Lafayette Closing, Here’s the Next Chapter for Bookstores in the Region
Books-A-Million, a well-known bookstore located at 4419 Ambassador Caffery Parkway in Lafayette, is closing its doors. Over the past few weeks, the store has been attracting customers with going-out-of-business discounts ranging from 20% to 30%. Despite no official closing date, the imminent shutdown is evident from conversations with store employees and social media buzz.
Customers have taken to Facebook to share their experiences and alert fellow book lovers. One post highlighted the store-wide sale, emphasizing the variety of items available, from books and board games to toys and novelties.
Another post noted the uncertainty surrounding the store's final day, with an employee mentioning the lack of a firm closing date.
During a phone call to the store, an associate confirmed the closure but could not provide a specific date. There was speculation about December 31st being the final day; however, as of January 4th, the store remained open.
The closing of Books-A-Million is certainly a loss for Lafayette's book lovers, but it is not the end of the literary scene in the area by any means. Locally-owned Beausoleil Books in Downtown Lafayette and national chains like Barnes & Noble on Johnston Street continue to cater to the reading community. Furthermore, an exciting development is on the horizon with the upcoming opening of 2nd & Charles, a sister store to Books-A-Million.
According to a November 2023 report from The Acadiana Advocate, 2nd & Charles is set to open in mid-year 2024 at the former Sears Home & Life store in the River Marketplace shopping center, located at 4405 Ambassador Caffery Parkway. This store, known for its eclectic mix of new and used books, music, games, toys, collectibles, decor, accessories, and pop culture merchandise, will provide a new haven for book lovers and collectors alike. Customers will also have the opportunity to sell gently used merchandise back to the store for cash or store credit.
As one chapter closes with Books-A-Million, another begins with the arrival of its sister store 2nd & Charles, promising to keep the bookworms alive and happy in Lafayette.
